What is an IEP?

The Individualized Education Program (“IEP”) is, in brief, a comprehensive statement of the educational needs of a disabled child and the specially designed instruction and related services to be employed to meet those needs. [1] In New York State, the IEP is produced by a Committee on Special Education (“CSE”), whose members are appointed by the board of education or trustees of the school district. [2]

I like to think of it as a contract between the school district and the family. An IEP contains a student’s present levels of educational performance (“PLEP”), short-term goals, long-term objectives, management needs, and programming recommendations, related services, and accommodations.
